Minibus Hire Across Australia

Minibus Hire in Townsville, with Your Own Driver

Townsville is a relaxed tropical city, with The Strand along the water, Castle Hill overhead and Magnetic Island a short ferry ride out. A minibus with a driver keeps a family or a visiting team together, from the airport to the game and out into the ranges.

Around the city

You'll touch down at Garbutt, only 10 to 15 minutes (about 9 km) from Flinders Street. There's no dedicated coach pick-up spot, so you'll find your driver in the signed public zone just outside.

The road up Castle Hill reopened in October 2025 after slope repairs, and there's parking at the summit for cars and coaches. Go early or near sunset, when the heat is gentler and the views over the city to Magnetic Island are at their best.

Game day at the stadium

Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Railway Estate is easy with a small group. A minibus or people mover, or anything else seating 22 or fewer, can pull into the Dean Street car park to set down and collect, no booking required; it drives in off Rooney Street, and it's roughly a 500 m walk to Gate A. A larger coach has to book a bay in the charter zone across Dean Street, beside Central Park.

On big event days there's nowhere on site to leave a car, so travelling together makes sense.

Places your group will want to see

  • Museum of Tropical Queensland — Flinders Street, city
  • Billabong Sanctuary — Wildlife park about 17 km south on the Bruce Highway, open daily 9am-4pm
  • Magnetic Island — About 20 min by passenger ferry from the Breakwater terminal, or about 40 min by vehicle ferry from 42 Ross Street, South Townsville
  • The Strand — Beachfront foreshore with the rock pool, jetty and views to Magnetic Island
  • Castle Hill — Summit lookout above the city with car and coach parking; road reopened in October 2025 after slope stabilisation

Where groups usually stay

  • Magnetic Island (Nelly Bay, Horseshoe Bay)
  • Palmer Street, South Townsville
  • City centre / Flinders Street
  • The Strand / North Ward

Over to Magnetic Island

Most groups hop on the passenger ferry at the Breakwater, a crossing of about 20 minutes, and get around by island transport once they land. There is a vehicle ferry, leaving South Townsville and taking around 40 minutes to Nelly Bay, but every vehicle must be booked, so check before you plan on bringing the minibus.

Days out beyond the city

Billabong Sanctuary is only 20 minutes south, open daily from 9am to 4pm. Charters Towers, about 136 km inland, makes a full day out; allow 90 to 105 minutes each way. Reef HQ, the reef aquarium, is shut while it's rebuilt and isn't expected back until 2029, so leave it off this year's plans.

Paluma is about an hour and a quarter up Mount Spec, on a steep, narrow road without guard rails; the operator confirms whether your vehicle suits it and how the road is holding up. The road in to Wallaman Falls is signed as unsuitable for buses, so it's not a trip to plan by minibus.

Your questions

Where can the driver drop us for a game at the stadium?

If it seats 22 or fewer, inside the Dean Street car park, reached off Rooney Street, and no booking is needed. Bigger coaches need to reserve a spot in the charter parking zone, a 400 m walk or so from Gate A.

Can we take the minibus to Magnetic Island?

Only on the vehicle ferry, where bookings are essential. Most groups find it simpler to ride the passenger ferry and get around the island once they're there.

How long is the drive to Cairns?

It's about 350 km, a long day on the road. On larger buses the trip has to fit the driver's Heavy Vehicle National Law work and rest hours, so plan proper stops or split the journey.
