Landing in the Top End: Darwin Airport group pickups
Stepping off the plane into Darwin's warmth, nobody in the group wants to stand around at the kerb. A minibus with a driver, booked ahead, turns the quarter-hour run into town into the start of the holiday.
Two minutes at the kerb
Darwin International Airport doesn't publish a coach or charter pick-up point. Instead, vehicles use the general pick-up and drop-off zones, which allow a two-minute stop at most, with the driver kept behind the wheel.
That short window shapes the arrival: collect your bags, gather everyone inside, then step out as the driver pulls up. The airport itself suggests bus, coach and minibus charters for large groups, so you're doing exactly what it recommends.

Into the city
Smith Street Mall is about 11 km away, roughly 15 minutes, with no tolls to pay anywhere in the Territory. Most hotels are in the CBD along Mitchell Street, at the Waterfront or out towards Mindil Beach.
Landing on a Thursday or Sunday between late April and late October? Mindil Beach's Sunset Market opens at 4 pm, under 3 km from the city, and makes a relaxed first evening for the whole family.
The terminals
- Single passenger terminal (domestic and international)
Good to know at Darwin International Airport
- The public bus stop is on Henry Wrigley Drive, adjacent to the Mercure Darwin Airport Resort, about a 600 m (8-minute) walk from the terminal.
- The airport lists bus, coach and minibus charter companies among its transport options for large groups.
- Unattended vehicles in the pick-up and drop-off zones are fined immediately and may be towed.
Days out from Darwin
Litchfield National Park is about an hour and a half away, with its main falls reached on two-wheel-drive roads. Kakadu is about three hours, and everyone except Territory residents needs a park pass. And it's about 50 minutes to the jumping crocodile cruises along the Arnhem Highway.
Plan walks for the cooler hours. Kakadu's rangers advise avoiding roughly 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm in the heat and drinking at least a litre of water per person every hour. From roughly November to March the wet season floods some areas, so look at the park's daily access report before setting out.
Your questions
Can we be picked up and go straight to Litchfield?
Yes, if the daylight allows. Litchfield is about an hour and a half away, so a morning arrival leaves time for the falls. After an overnight flight, consider a hotel stop first.
Do we need a special operator for a Kakadu day?
For a guided day, yes: tour operators and guides need a Kakadu permit or licence to run tours in the park, so ask for one who holds it. Non-residents also need a park pass each.
How many people fit in a minibus?
A minibus seats 16 to 19, though luggage room is limited with every seat taken. For bigger parties a midi coach seats 29 to 35.
