Cairns Airport pickups for the reef, the rainforest and Port Douglas
Cairns Airport is just 7 km from the city, but plenty of groups are headed further: Palm Cove, the Northern Beaches or Port Douglas. A minibus or people mover with a driver takes the whole party up the coast in one go, bags and all.
Zones for booked transport at both terminals
Cairns has two terminals, T1 International and T2 Domestic, and each has designated ground transport zones for commercial vehicles, buses included. To work there an operator needs a Ground Access Licence from the airport, or its express written consent.
The public zones right outside are strictly for immediate pick-ups, and the free Standby Zone is meant for private cars, so there's nowhere for a group vehicle to linger. Your flight number lets the operator time things properly.

Up the coast
City Place is only a 10 to 15 minute drive. Palm Cove is roughly 25 minutes up the road, Port Douglas about an hour, and Far North Queensland has no tolls.
For a Port Douglas wedding, one vehicle can ferry guests between the airport, the resort and the ceremony, far easier than a string of taxis.

Good to know at Cairns Airport
- The airport lists private shuttle bus operators who take bookings directly.
- The public pick-up zones directly outside T1 and T2 are for immediate pick-ups and drop-offs only; no waiting or parking, and passengers must be ready at the kerb.
- Every operator doing business on airport property needs an approved Cairns Airport Ground Access Licence or the airport's express written consent; bus and limousine operators apply online through the Park Charge system.
Kuranda, the Daintree and the reef
The classic Kuranda day pairs the Skyrail cableway one way with the Kuranda Scenic Railway the other, so the vehicle drops you at one end and collects you at the other. Skyrail's Smithfield terminal is about 15 minutes north of the city.
Further north, the Daintree River ferry takes about 15 minutes to cross and queues build in school holidays, so leave early for Cape Tribulation. Mossman Gorge is about an hour and a quarter from Cairns, where visitors ride a shuttle in from the Mossman Gorge Centre.
Your questions
Can the minibus take us straight to Port Douglas?
Yes. It's about an hour from Cairns, and going straight there after landing saves a second transfer later.
Where do the reef boats leave from?
The Reef Fleet Terminal in the city is the departure point for Great Barrier Reef, Green Island and Fitzroy Island trips. Your driver can drop you there and collect you when the boat is back.
Will the Daintree ferry slow us down?
It can in school holidays. Tourism buses may use a priority lane, managed from 9 am to 4.30 pm in peak season. Tides and river levels can also hold up the crossing, so it's worth checking the ferry's status that morning.
