Hobart from the Wharf: Small-Group Tours for Cruise Passengers
In Hobart the ship ties up almost in town, with the port less than 800 m from the CBD. For a small group that wants more than the waterfront, a minibus or people mover opens up the mountain, the valleys and the convict history within a single day in port.
The 12-seat line
Hobart treats small and large vehicles differently. If your pre-booked tour or transfer vehicle has under 12 seats, it uses a two-hour voucher space along the waterfront, and the driver walks across to meet you at the terminal. A typical people mover qualifies.
Book something larger than a 12-seater and the pick-up needs arranging with the Southern Operations Team at TasPorts, two full days (48 hours) or more ahead. If your group needs a minibus or a coach, book early enough for the operator to do that; a same-day request for a larger vehicle may not be workable.

The waterfront on ship days
The ship's own shore-excursion coaches line up right next to it. On cruise days Franklin Wharf, Hunter Street to Constitution Dock Bridge, is closed to through traffic, so your meeting point won't simply be wherever looks handy on a map.
Hobart has no more than two ships alongside at once. A 24-hour closure of the waterfront roads also comes with the Sydney to Hobart race and the New Year period, on dates TasPorts confirms each year.

Where a day in port can take you
kunanyi / Mount Wellington is the view everyone wants. Pinnacle Road is sealed yet narrow and full of bends, there's not much room to park up top, and ice or snow can shut it, usually somewhere between April and September.
MONA is about 20 minutes north by road, or ride its ferry from Brooke Street Pier and have the minibus collect you afterwards. Richmond is about 25 minutes out. For a national park like Mount Field, every visitor needs a parks pass, and a licensed tour operator makes sure each guest is covered.
Your questions
Can the driver wait beside the ship?
Only the ship's own excursion coaches are staged at the berth. A small vehicle parks in a waterfront voucher space and the driver walks over; a bigger one uses a pick-up agreed with TasPorts in advance.
Will Port Arthur get us back before all-aboard?
It's roughly 90 minutes each way, so it fits a full day in port. Tell us your all-aboard time and the return is planned with room to spare.
What if the mountain road is shut for snow?
During snow closures only the one licensed shuttle may take visitors up, so a private minibus can't. Keep MONA or Richmond ready as the winter back-up.
