See Vivid Sydney Together, Then Ride Home Warm

Vivid Sydney 2027 opens on Friday 28 May and runs 23 nights, ending on Saturday 19 June, with light spread from the Opera House and Circular Quay through The Rocks to Barangaroo, Darling Harbour and beyond. It's a winter night out, so a warm vehicle waiting at the end is half the pleasure.

The 2027 festival

The festival starts a little later than usual in 2027, lining up with the June public holiday. Choose your night early, and let us know whether you'd like to be set down before dark or after dinner, as that shapes the whole evening.

When and where

  • Circular Quay, The Rocks and the Sydney Opera House, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour and other locations across Sydney
  • Friday 28 May - Saturday 19 June 2027 (23 nights)

How the harbour ran in 2026

Arrangements change every year, but 2026 gives a fair picture. From 3 pm until 1 am the harbourside roads were shut, and buses were rerouted to other stops. Saturday-night trains skipped the Circular Quay platforms from 6 to 11 pm, leaving Wynyard as the station to use. Routes that usually end at Circular Quay were moved to Martin Place, roughly 1.1 km from the water, starting at 6 pm on Fridays and 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

For a minibus group, that points to a set-down at the edge of the closed area and a short walk in, not a drop at the Opera House steps. The operator plans the stop once the 2027 arrangements are known. Fares stay as normal during the festival, so a few of your group could just as easily take the train.

Big parties and long days

Coming with a full-size coach? Transport for NSW runs a coach layover at King Street Wharf, reached from Lime Street, with 55 bays for NSW-accredited charter, tourist and long-distance coaches whose details are registered ahead. A large party's coach has somewhere to wait while you walk the lights, though passengers board and alight elsewhere, never inside the layover itself.

You could pair Vivid with the Blue Mountains, roughly 1.75 hours each way from Sydney, but that makes a long shift. Where the national fatigue rules apply to heavier buses, twelve hours of work in any 24 is the ceiling for a driver, so let the operator shape the day around that.

Your questions

Where will the driver meet us after the lights?

At a spot outside the closures, agreed beforehand. Choose a landmark, give everyone the time, and message the driver if you're running behind.

What size vehicle suits us?

A people mover usually seats six or seven, a minibus 16 to 19. Beyond that, a midi or full-size coach is the better fit.

Will the 2026 closures be the same in 2027?

Not necessarily. They're described here as how things ran in 2026; check the festival's transport information as the dates approach.
